This was a Music Technology assignment I did back in college, years ago now, I just came across it on an old hard drive. The idea was that we had to make a soundscape for one of a given list of environments. Seeing as this was my last year in college, with all the stress that entails, I chose ‘Hell’ from the list. The result is terrible, but it was fun to make, and fun to listen back to now.
It’s supposed to be someone journeying through Hell towards their own final torment. The crappy brass band bit in the middle was my attempt at including a bit of the Hell from the Woody Allen movie, ‘Deconstructing Harry’, where Billy Crystal is the Devil (I even tried to rob the tune from that movie). The assignment said I had to use MIDI instruments somewhere, so that’s what I came up with. The bit at the end, with the distorted typewriter sounds, was what felt like my own private torment at the time: endlessly typing my dissertation.
